[4-2. They all, having made enquiry and
determined which were the most worthy, elected by vote of the congregation five
hundred Theras.]
[25. At that time Asoka,
the son of Susunāga, was king; that prince ruled in the town of Pāṭaliputta.]. [King Kāḷāsoka was the
son of Susunāga and ruled Pāṭaliputta for 28 years.]
Bhikkhus were a group of Buddhist monks who split from the orthodox Theras. The
Vajjiputtakas refused to accept the finding of Revatas Council and formed a
separate sect, the Mahasanghikas, numbering ten thousand monks, who held a
recital of their own.] நியதிகளை [a set of rules] மாற்றியமைக்கும் முயற்சி நடந்தது.

Part: 40 / Appendix –
Dipavamsa / 'Is 84,000 a special number in the Theravada Buddhism?'
Chapter 4 is about the First and the Second Buddhist Councils which were held in India. The first one was held four months after the Buddha’s death and continued for seven months, 5-5. The second council was held one hundred years after the death of the Buddha and continued for eight months, 5-29. Theras of the First Buddhist Council collected the teachings of Buddha and established the Buddhist concept under the leadership of Mahakassapa. The Characteristic earthquake also happened on the completion of the collection of the Buddha’s teachings. The concept of voting to elect representatives is adopted to select the five hundred Theras from the seven hundred thousand Bikkhus who assembled; could be the first or among the earliest in record to elect representatives by voting, 4-2. As Theras compiled the concepts it is called Theravada Buddhism. The second Buddhist council is to reaffirm the Faith as set out in the First Council. Both the Councils had taken place in India. This chapter also has no historical human events that took place in Lanka. The number 84,000 seems to be a special number in the Theravada Buddhism. There are 84,000 divisions in the doctrine. There are also 84,000 towns, and Asoka built a monastery in each of the town. There are some ancillary details about kings and monks which are not essential for the history of Lanka.
Chapter 5 is about the
seventeen other sects arose from the Theravada Buddhism. Theravada Buddhism
remained pure for one hundred years. Then arose the different sects; seventeen
in number. 5-25 implies that the King Asoka is the son of Susunaga. There must
be a clerical error here. The referenced king must be Kala-Asoka, and not the
Dhamma Asoka. Kala-Asoka was a ruler in the Shishunaga dynasty, and was also
known as Kakavarna. He was the son and successor of Shishunaga, the dynasty's
founder. Some scholars consider Kala-Asoka a fictitious character. There was an
attempt to modify the canons by about twelve thousand Vajjiputas [wicked men]
one hundred years after the death of the Buddha. Eight eminent Theras assembled
to counter this attempt, and had the Second Buddhist Council under the aegis of
the king (Kala)-Asoka. Those Theras who wanted the modification separated and
formed the Mahayana Buddhism which spread to Tibet and then to China, Japan and
Korea. Then many other sects formed,
totalling seventeen sects, apart from Theravada. Third Buddhist Council allegedly took place
one hundred and eighteen years after the second council under the aegis of the
King Asoka. Theravada concept was reaffirmed in the Third Buddhist Council, and
many deviant Bikkhus were disrobed by the King Asoka. The Lengths of the reigns
relative to the Mahaparinirvana of the Buddha of various kings of India and
Lanka and the relative overlapping of the reigns are also given in this
chapter. Many legends are also in the chapter. Moggaliputta Tissa who descended
from the Brahma’s world (world of gods) is the chief of the Third Council. Scholars
like Vincent A. Smith, express doubts whether the Third Buddhist Council
actually took place. There is doubt about the Second Buddhist Council too. It
is interesting to note that the number 84,000 and earthquake are very special
to Buddhism! All the events in this
chapter happened not in Lanka, and therefore do not contribute to the human
history of Lanka.
